Dear Chaparral Football Family:

Now that our players and coaches have made history by winning our third state championship in a row, as President of the Chaparral Firebird Football Foundation I wanted to take the time to thank each and every one of you.  As with any endeavor it takes a team effort to be successful and our 2011 State Championship was no exception!

To our coaches and players we thank you for all of your hard work and dedication and congratulate you on winning the 2011 State Championship.  Your commitment to this football program and its success is unequaled in our football program’s history.

To our former players, alumni and family members we want to thank you and let you know that we have not forgotten that it was you that started this level of success not only in 2008, when we went to our first championship game under Coach Ragle’s guidance, but all the way back to 1999 when Coach Estabrook and his teams set the foundation of success by winning championships in 1999, 2000 and 2002!
To the Bird Cage, you are the best fans we could possibly hope to have and we thank you for your energy (and craziness) and want you to know that we appreciate you!

To Pom and Cheer thank you for all the hard work and dedication, you truly are the best in the state!
To our parents and community, without your continued support none of this could be possible.  We thank you for your tireless efforts not only physically but emotionally and financially because without your support of this football program none of this would be possible!

As we wind down the season we look forward to celebrating the championship and honoring the players and coaches at the Varsity Banquet on December 11th.  We hope to see all of the players and families at this final get together for the 2011 football season, so if you have not RSVP’d please do so.  Please contact Andrea Svetley at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

All the best wishes to our seniors as they finish out their high school career and head into college and we want you to know that we will be following your success and look forward to when you return to cheer for the teams that follow.

We ask that you don’t forget about all of our local sponsors this year and make sure you visit their establishments during the off-season,  visit the web site as we will keep updating it with new information and order your 2011  Championship T-Shirts in the Shopping Mall this week along with the championship game Photos.  If you need an income tax credit, please don’t forget about donating to the football program through the Arizona Tax Credit Program, let us know if you need more information on how to make that donation by year end.

Have a great Holiday Season and New Year and we will get started working on our fourth State Championship in January!

Wild finish sends Chaparral to Div. II Champ Game

Posted: Friday, November 18, 2011 11:22 pm | Updated: 2:12 am, Sat Nov 19, 2011.By Mark Heller, Tribune

The word of the night was "perseverance."Everyone on the Chaparral football team knew the "how" and "why" Friday night's Division II state semifinal turned from a potential runaway into a teeth-clencher.The "who" was all that mattered after a second half of wild score changes, because after Davonte Neal's last-minute interception at the Chaparral goalline ended Peoria Centennial's final drive in Chaparral's 31-30 victory.

Chaparral keeps grasp on lead to beat Centennial

by Richard Obert - Nov. 18, 2011 11:11 PMThe Arizona Republic | azcentral.com

Scottsdale Chaparral lost momentum, a 17-0 lead and, it seemed, a third straight shot at a state championship.

Then Davonte' Neal came up with his first interception of the season with 1:04 left, helping Chaparral beat resilient Peoria Centennial 31-30 in a classic Division II semifinal Friday night at Phoenix North Canyon.
Centennial (11-2), facing a third-and-1, snapped the ball to running back Jalen Ortiz, who pulled up and threw into the end zone, but Neal, back-pedaling, made the interception falling down.
"Oh, man, it came at the right time," Neal said. "I just put myself in the right position to make the play. I found the ball and I knew I needed to catch it."
Chaparral (13-1), which will try to win its third straight state title Saturday at Sun Devil Stadium against No. 2 Vail Cienega, dominated the first half, as Connor Brewer hit Jake Roh with a 28-yard touchdown pass, Lucas Petrullo dived over a pile for a 1-yard score and Dylan Audsley connected on a 30-yard field goal.
Centennial's Justin Sanchez hit Troy Hawthorne for a 23-yard touchdown, then found Ortiz on a 53-yard catch-and-run for a score that cut it to 17-14.
Then, Neal, fighting for extra yards after gaining 22 yards on a catch-and-run, had the ball stripped. Ortiz picked up the fumble and ran it back 52 yards, and Centennial had Chaparral on the ropes entering the final quarter with a 21-17 lead.
"They're a good football team," Chaparral coach Charlie Ragle said of Centennial. "You're not going to keep them down forever. They made a couple of good plays."
Centennial snapped the ball over the punter's head and Chaparral had the ball at Centennial's 9. Petrullo barreled in for a 24-21 lead.

Chaparral rolls to win against Perry

Chaparral rolls to win against Perry - Squad moves on to face Centennial

by Sam Good - Nov. 10, 2011 11:52 PM  Special for The Republic

At halftime, top-seeded Scottsdale Chaparral had more points than No. 8 Gilbert Perry had yards.

That's all you really need to know about Thursday night's quarterfinal of the Division II playoffs.

Chaparral (12-1) moved the ball at will, while its defense smothered Perry (9-3) in a 51-7 victory.

Chaparral moves on to face No. 5 Peoria Centennial next Friday night.

"We're starting to play our best football," Chaparral coach Charlie Ragle said, "because we've got everybody healthy."
Chaparral's defense has seemingly improved every week this season, and Thursday was no exception. It didn't allow a first down
until the 1:41 mark of the first quarter, but that came on a roughing the kicker penalty during a Perry punt.

The defense also recorded a safety late in the fourth quarter.
"We want to play good defense," Ragle said. "We wanted to come out here and show that tonight, and I think we did."
Perry had the ball to start the game, and after forcing a three and out, Chaparral quickly got on the board thanks to an 18-yard touchdown run
from quarterback Connor Brewer.

Chaparral senior playmaker Davonte Neal had little trouble finding the end zone as he ran for a 32-yard touchdown just three minutes later.

Chaparral blowout of Perry sets up semifinal matchup with Centennial

By Anthony Martinez, Tribune
Chaparral continued to fire on all cylinders as it dominated No. 8 Perry for a 51-7 victory in the Division II state quarterfinals Thursday night at Chaparral.
The Firebirds will now take its high-powered offense and stout defense to the Division II semifinals where they will take on No. 5 Peoria Centennial at 7 p.m. on Nov. 18 at North Canyon High School.
"It's two great programs," Chaparral coach Charlie Ragle said of Centennial. "We have the utmost respect for them, a perennial powerhouse, and these guys know we're going to have our work cut for us to go in there and play with them."
This week, however, the No. 1 Firebirds (12-1) didn't do much wrong as they got off to a fast start and took control on both sides of the ball.
"That's as close as you can get (to everything going as planned)," Ragle said.
The Firebirds defense forced three straight 3-and-outs and allowed the Pumas (9-3) just one play for positive yardage on their first three drives.
"They're big up front, they're physical, they're well-coached and they're disciplined," Perry coach Preston Jones said of the Firebirds.
Chaparral swarmed to receivers which forced incompletions and applied a lot of pressure on Perry's dual-threat quarterback Josh Uhlorn. The rest of the Pumas backfield and running game quickly became a nonfactor.
"The one thing we try to pride ourselves the last five years we've been here is we want to play good defense," Ragle said. "We sent a message to our kids all week long that we're a good football team and we're a good defensive football team and we wanted to come out here and show that."
The Firebirds sacked Uhlorn twice, with Jarvis Lewis and Dylan Cozens each putting Uhlorn on his back once.
With the defense providing great field position to start drives, the Chaparral offense put on a show with scores in its first six drives before failing to score on the last drive before halftime.
"That's how the game should be played when you can set the field position up like that and the offense can capitalize on that then the outcome can look like this," Ragle said.
Brewer made it looked easy and exposed Perry's secondary for big passing plays.
Firebirds quarterback Connor Brewer finished the game completing 8-of-11 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown. Brewer came out of the game after the Firebirds scored on their first drive of the third quarter.
"They played off and they bit so we did a couple of double moves and mixed it up," Brewer said.
The Chaparral running game also showed what a well-oiled machine it has been lately by racking up 260 yards and averaging 8.39 yards per carry.
Lucas Petrullo, who is close to full strength after missing most of the season with a foot injury, led the attack with 104 yards and two touchdowns.
Davonte Neal also did his usual damage by rushing for 62 yards and a touchdown, and four catches for 89 yards and a touchdown.
The 44-point loss marked a tough end for Perry after seeing its offense average 58 points during its seven-game winning streak.
"I told them there's only one team that ends the season happy," Jones said. "Our kids had a good year and made the final eight so they can hang their heads high."
